In the past, these fillings were made of metals that were obvious to others when you opened your mouth to eat or talk. With advancements in dental technology, we offer our patients the latest and greatest materials for fillings, which utilize materials that are not only natural-looking, but also respond like natural teeth. What are Fillings and When Do You Need Them?

Cavities (tooth decay) are a common issue experienced by many patients. This decay occurs when food that we eat and bacteria create acid that then begins to eat away at the tooth. If left untreated, this combination of bacteria, acid, and saliva creates plaque, which will dissolve your enamel and create holes in your teeth.

There are three layers of the tooth that can be affected by decay:

Enamel– the outer coating of the tooth
Dentin– the inner layer
Pulp– the center of your tooth which contains nerves and blood vessels

The more layers involved in the decay, the greater the damage which will require intervention. The procedure of a filling is meant to stop further decay from occurring and restore the tooth back to a healthy state. A filling removes the decayed portion of your tooth and then “fills” it with tooth-like material.

Generally there is less pain and sensitivity in the post-treatment period associated with composite materials as compared to traditional metals.

The Filling Procedure

You may be aware that a cavity is forming due to discomfort or by the appearance of a dark spot on your tooth. Sometimes, however, you may not know a cavity exists, which is why your preventative cleanings are so important. It is during these regular checkups with Dr. Morgan that our team may come across decay after using x-rays to check between your teeth.

Once a cavity is identified, we will schedule a subsequent appointment to take care of the filling. During this visit, we will prep the area and isolate the tooth to be filled. To ensure successful bonding of the composite material to your tooth, the area needs to be devoid of moisture. Once the appropriate adhesives and composites have been placed, it will be hardened with a special bonding light.
