Dentures are an option for our patients who have lost a significant amount of teeth. They are prosthetic replacements for missing teeth that attach to the surrounding soft and hard tissues of your mouth.  The following are different types of denture treatments:

Full Dentures

These act as a full set of removable teeth, which are placed after all teeth have been removed and the gums have healed.

Partial Dentures

What is the Difference Between Dentures and Dental Implants

Both treatments are an effective solution based on your specific situation. Luckily, Dr. Morgan offers denture and dental implant services for our patients and wants to ensure that each individual has the solution that best suits them. While both are viable solutions, they are very different. Our staff is ready to help you determine the best approach for your situation. In the meantime, here are some ways dentures differ from dental implants:

  • In general, the process of creating and applying dentures is faster than dental implants since implants are a permanent tooth replacement option. For dentures, a patient only needs to have molds taken of their mouth and then come in for a second appointment to try out several different dentures for a perfect fit. In contrast, dental implants require multiple visits and several months.
  • Dentures are removable which mean they sit on top of the gum line and can be removed when needed. As a result, these are often not as sturdy as other options and can slide around in the mouth. Dental implants, however, are attached to the jawbone which creates a much more sturdy replacement.
  • This procedure is ideal for patients who have lost multiple teeth and are looking to replace an entire upper or lower arch of teeth
  • Because dentures sit on the gum line and are not implanted into the jaw bone, this removable prosthetic does not help the jawbone to continue growing. The lack of growth can cause teeth alignment issues and may even change the shape of your face. Dental implants do stimulate the bone in the jaw by burying a titanium implant into the bone – this causes the jawbone to continue growing normally.
  • The denture procedure is less invasive, quicker, and not permanent so it is generally less expensive than dental implants. For more information on the cost of dentures, contact us today.

Maintenance of Dentures

Dentures are temporary and, therefore, will need to be relined and rebased over time due to normal wear. We recommend our patients check in with Dr. Morgan like they would normally – visit with us at least twice a year so that we can evaluate your mouth and any changes that could affect the fit of your dentures. Proper maintenance will help prolong the life of your dentures, helping you get the best value and quality of use. Here are some additional tips to remember:

  • Dentures can break, so always be careful when removing them. We recommend that patients soften their sink basins with a folded towel.
  • You want to avoid drying out your dentures by keeping them moist. You can prevent this by placing them in denture cleanser solution or in water when you’re not using them. Make sure to not use hot water, however, as this can alter their shape.
  • Brush your dentures and gums daily just as you would normal teeth. This will help remove food deposits and plaque, as well as avoid staining.
